A Real Master of Glass - Dale Chihuly
On a cold winter’s evening back in 2005, I visited Kew Gardens where a major exhibition was being held featuring a multitude of works by the internationally renowned, contemporary glass artist Dale Chihuly. Both inside and outside the glasshouses was a stunning display of organically shaped, beautifully lit glass sculptures. Wondering around admiring these magnificent sculptures really left a huge impression on me. The sheer scale of some was incredible.
Since then I have visited the Victoria and Albert Museum a few times and momentarily stopped to admire the absolutely awe-inspiring chandelier which hangs in the main entrance hall. However, it wasn’t until last Saturday whilst in London, that I had the pleasure of experiencing another Chihuly exhibition currently being held at the Halcyon Gallery in New Bond Street. Although not on such a huge scale, this selling exhibition incorporates a fantastic collection of installations spanning across four decades of Chihuly’s career. Everything is beautifully presented and perfectly lit, maximizing on the array of colourful glass art pieces. I thoroughly enjoyed engaging with the art and would strongly recommend taking a look. It is a real rarity to see so many fine examples as close up and personal as this.
Occasionally an example will come up for sale at auction houses such as Christie’s and Sotheby’s. However, I feel that this is possibly one of the best opportunities so far to acquire a Dale Chihuly glass art masterpiece.
