Nicholson, William Newzam Prior 1872-1949 British, Woman by a Window.
Auction: July 2022
15.5 x 12 ins., (39.5 x 30.5 cms.), Oil on Canvas. Illustrated and Dated 1892 by Patricia Reed in her catalogue raisonne. Good condition, unframed. There is a small dispute about the date of the painting, its style and composition would suggest it has some sympathy with he greater influence of Whistler on William's style. Whistler's nocturne paintings must have made a big impression on William as seen in his approach to Woman by a Window. The family think that the painting is set in a fisherman's cottage probably in St. Ives with the wife expectantly waiting for her husband. William's control of light in a dark background is totally exceptional and has created a wonderful painting. Please see Lot 1 Dandelion Field for full provenance for this painting
