Lot 4
Nicholson, William Newzam Prior 1872-1949 British Girl on a Chair.

Auction: July 2022

19 x 11 ins., (48.5 x 28 cms.), Oil on Mill Board. Faint and rough sketch verso. The painting is dated 1892 by Patricia Reid in her catalogue Raisonne, where it is illustrated in colour. The sitter was thought to be Dorothy, a cousin of the artist. Margaret Steen stated that while a student, William had formed an attachment to his orphaned cousin. Dorothy came to live with the Nicholsons (Steen 1943 p37) and he painted her portrait. No record has been found of this cousin, she could have been the daughter of Alfred Leed's elder sister, Emily. The portrait of Dorothy was one of William's earlier portraits, a subject he would paint many times in the future. For full provenance, please see lot 1 The Dandelion Field.

Estimate: £15,000 - £20,000
