Crome, John 1768 - 1827 British Landscape.
Auction: July 2021
9 x 16 ins., (23 x 40.5 cms.), Oil on Canvas, named plaque on frame. The canvas is in good condition, but too much varnish on the painting takes away some of the beauties of the oil paint. If the varnish was removed and the painting given a clean, it would be in good condition. There is nothing wrong with the canvas or the actual image. John Crome or Old Crome as he was known was one of the founders and leading lights of the Norwich School. He lived in Norwich all his life and painted around the area. It is therefore quite likely the subject matter is a scene near Norwich. His works are held in the Tate, National Gallery, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Louvre and many other prestigious galleries.
